Transcripts are of periodic reports submitted to Board by commissioners of each district, chief engineers and assistant engineers concern engineering, surveying and construction of various internal improvement projects and contain information on payrolls, price for commodities, construction cost estimates, contracts and work progress at each site. Also containedx are copies of Board's annual reports to Governor.

The Board of Commissioners of Public Works was created by 1837 act (l. 1837, p. 121). Board was primarily responsible for locating, superintending and constructing all internal improvement projects authorized by General Assembly except for Illinois and Michigan Canal.
